Milan Nightlife Guide
Traveling throughout Milan presents in itself the opportunity to live it up. You can't pass by Milan without enjoying its vibrant nightlife – that would be climbing the Alps with nary a sweater.
Milan nightlife is very thrilling – the city has many bars and clubs to enjoy,
and even has the world-famous "La Scala" for those craving an experience of the
classical arts.
Specific club hours in urbane Milan are almost non-existent – opening and
closing hours vary, depending on the seasons and the crowd. Openings can be
anywhere from 1900 to 23:00, and closings can be anywhere from 01:00 to dawn.
Most bars and restaurants stay open until 01:00 – after which the energetic
crowd troops to the discoteca or nightclubs, which stays awake until 04:00.
Evenings begin with the passegiata – a tradition itself in Italy – where
everyone in his smartest get-up would promenade up and down major streets 'to
see and to be seen'. The trend is to visit two or three hot locales, said to
show social savoir-faire and bellafigura.
Bars and cafes come into their own between 18:00 and 21:00 to serve the perfect
aperitivo for the after-work crowd, and to offer what is possibly the best place
to see and be seen. Free finger foods with aperitifs are offered, along with
cocktails.
One of the hottest bars in town is the Dieci 10 Corso Como. Its decorations are
slightly oriental, and for a classic bar, Victoria Café in the city's financial
district is a good choice. If you're a high roller, you may want to drop by Il
Gattopardo Café, which is housed in a deconsecrated church – just book in
advance.
If you happen to be by during the warm weathers, chill out in The Garden Bar –
one of the coolest spots to be, especially during the Milan fashion weeks. For
artwork displays that vary every month, La Biciclette attracts an extremely
diverse crowd.
For a club with Italian house and techno music, nothing beats the Killer
Plastic, and for the beautiful and the glamorous, Hollywood Rhytmoteque is the
popular haunt. Hip-hop and house music is the main dish of Café L'Atlantique,
and the reopened Shocking Club shocks especially on Wednesdays with its
outrageous theme nights.
Now you can't completely tour Milan without dropping by the internationally
renowned Teatro alla Scala, "La Scala" to the world. It is always a worthwhile
visit, but buy tickets in advance as the good tickets are usually sold out even
before the tourist reaches Milan. Opera season traditionally begins on the 7th
of December and continues well into early June. Summer season offers concerts,
operas, and recitals, as well as ballet. La Scala is closed during mid-July to
August.
To make sure you never miss out on the Milanese nightlife, check the local
papers – pages for club schedules and cultural events are devoted during
Wednesdays and Thursdays. Or head to the tourist office in Piazza Duomo – fliers
lying there hail upcoming events. The office also has the Milano Mese – a
periodical distributed freely with bars, clubs, and restaurants listings, and
schedules of events.
